For Sale: Baby shoes, never worn

Apparently back in the 1920’s, Ernest Hemingway made a bet for $10 to write a complete story in six words. He won the bet.

For Sale: Baby shoes, never worn

What a chilling, thought-provoking, memorable and powerful tale. Its lodged in my mind, and it makes me feel sad.

Telling stories is an art. Evoking any emotional response in others through storytelling, whether good or bad is an art. In the fast paced world we live in we are continually bombarded with information. We can only take so much in. It makes sense to make our communication as clear and concise as we can.

What if you could sum up your story in six words? What words would you choose….? Would they be as accurate as these?

Aspirations compromised by procrastination, then children. – Harry Beighton

Four Weddings, Three kids, then cancer. – Gillian Johnson

Knight on white charger never showed. – Jane Kirk

Ditched the map, found better route. – Gillian Smellie

And on a lighter note, what if you could write any story in six words? Some of my favourites….

Dorothy: “Fuck it, I’ll stay here.”
- Steven Meretzky

Machine. Unexpectedly, I’d invented a time
- Alan Moore

Longed for him. Got him. Shit.
- Margaret Atwood

Leia: “Baby’s yours.” Luke: “Bad news…”
- Steven Meretzky

Go on challenge yourself. What six word inspiration can you come up with?  For more six word stories check out six word stories.
